iVolunteer Mumbai organised its first iVolunteer Factory Visits for 21 shelter children from Ankur-Asmita and project CHILD (Mumbai Central). Initiated in Mumbai, the underlying idea of this programme is to expose shelter children (above 13 years) to different types of job opportunities available in factories.
The
Activities
This maiden visit, on 23rd July ‘05, saw 21 shelter children, 6 volunteers and 4 staff members of the shelter organization make their way to Parle Products factory in Vile Parle (East), Mumbai. They were first shown a short animated film on the history of Parle, which was formed in the year 1929. This entertaining film, with cartoon characters as its story tellers, lasted for approximately 30 minutes. After learning about the process of manufacturing and packaging of biscuits and confectionaries, the group was taken around the factory to see the real thing. The whiff of Krackjack biscuits and Kismi toffees was enough to get the youngsters excited. All were intrigued by the 216 feet long oven used for baking the biscuits. Another crowd puller was the sight of the automatic toffee roller-cum-wrapper. The resource person from Parle, Mr. Sheikh, explained in detail the entire process - right from raw material selection to packaging and distribution - all in a manner that kept the children spellbound.
The
Programme
iVolunteer Factory Visits, like our other programme iVolunteer Excursions, will be organised on a monthly basis with older children of different shelter organisations. While we need volunteers to manage the children and show them around on the day of the visit, we would also like your help in organising the event and getting contacts for different factories. If you would like to volunteer your time and skills for this initiative, please contact us on 022-26105235/56828875
