Volunteering with the Specially Abled

On 23rd February, there was a Kavin Care Award function organized by the Ability Group in Pragati Maidan for disabled people. The visually impaired students gave group dance performances of Bharatnatyam which turned out to be mind blowing. The synchronization was so good that one couldn't believe the performers were visually impaired. Later, awards were distributed to five meritorious students to the tune of Rs. 1,00,000/- each for their outstanding achievements in various fields.

On Sunday, there was an Employ Ability fair in which about 53 companies participated to provide employment to a great number of handicapped candidates. I worked there as volunteer and was given the work of escorting and guiding the candidates to the various rooms in which interviews were being conducted. Hon'ble Finance Minister Shri P. Chidambaram also visited the event and spoke to a few handicapped candidates. I also got a chance to scan through the CVs of a few candidates and was amazed to see their qualifications. Many of them were MBAs and MCAs and professionally qualified which makes one realise that these students are no less than any other student.

It was really a wonderful experience being with handicapped and blind students for two days. I personally think that they should not be called 'disabled' students, rather they should be referred to as 'specially abled' persons who despite having some physical defect are able to reach heights that abled persons cannot. I was really touched by the experience and it gave me a lot of mental satisfaction and happiness by helping these people.
