Are you ready for Online Volunteers
First and foremost thing that an organization seeking Online Volunteers should do is to assess the need. The organization must know which are the areas that they need support in and to what extend. Who do they require, a new staff or a volunteer, is volunteer's physical presence crucial to carry out the job?

When physical presence is not crucial then is the right time to turn to online volunteering. Once you have decided on seeking an Online Volunteer, then you should draw out a plan and a work-profile for the person.

Before putting up the advertisement, please check the followings.

Do you have the technology to involve Online Volunteers?
The basic infrastructure in this case would be a reliable Internet connection and basic hardware & software to support browsing. This would also allow you to supervise the work on time.

Do you have enough time to manage Online Volunteers and their assignments?
Ideally one person of the organisation should be made in-charge to manage & coordinate all communications with the vol. A proper volunteering policy would be of great help.

Do you already successfully involve onsite volunteers?

Have you prepared staff and volunteers onsite for Online Volunteers?
Before assigning any work to the volunteer, it should be made clear to all your staff members as to why the organisation is going for this and what value addition he or she is going to make. Please ensure to explain that volunteering of any kind, online or on-site, should never be used purely as a substitute for paying staff.

Do you have a few simple Online Volunteering assignments already defined?
Prior going for a big or complex assignment, it would be a good idea to start with small and simple assignments. As this would help you know your as well as the volunteer's comfortable level.
